Sustainability at the core of National Trust’s ‘Summer of Play’

Our recent work with the National trust for their Summer of Play event series saw our design team produce a range of playful interventions and signposts to welcome and direct families to the event.

At the heart of the National Trust’s brief was sustainability. The installations needed to be durable to withstand the pressures of a British summer (up to 6/7 weeks) and last for future iterations of the event.

Our scheme aligned with NT’s strategy at every point from its creative integrity to the quality, durability and sustainability of the materials like using repurposed industry pallets for the main structure. We worked hard to ensure we used the most sustainable and natural resources without affecting the quality of delivery and adhere to our approach of reuse, renovate and refurb.

Additionally, the construction of the features was designed so that they could be easily dismantled and stored for future use (with a detailed set of de-rig and storage instructions to ensure that the features were as well protected as possible to prolong their use).

Some of the ways we ensure a continued sustainable footprint which last way beyond the end of the event include:

Re-purpose
We have partnered with a local further education provider in order to further reduce our wood and sheet material waste. Selected surplus wood and sheet material from the production house and installations are passed on to local colleges, to be re-purposed and re-built into new projects.

Re-energise
After being sorted into re-useable material or stored for use on other projects, any other surplus wood, sheet material or offcuts that are either too small or damaged to be re-used are disposed of using an in-house waste burner which uses the heat generated to heat the production factory and office areas.

Responsible to the core
We only use FSC approved wood for our build projects and use suppliers who responsibly source their materials and dispose of them sustainably. We also send our surplus cores and backing paper to be responsibly disposed off and turned into clean, renewable energy.

Keep it local
We work closely with our suppliers to ensure we use as much locally produced material as possible. Our printed materials come from selected British and European manufacturers and our MDF is sourced only from Wales and Scotland.
